Monday: Live at The Fillmore Room

UPDATE: The Fillmore Room is currently closed for repairs and renovations. But, you can always catch Glenn Crytzer with his Pegu Club Allstars on Sunday Nights. Read about it here.

The Fillmore Room seems like quite the misnomer for an establishment featuring 4 fireplaces, 3 dining areas, a ballroom and a bar. This ambitious restaurant and event space hasn't been around long, opening in the spring of 2015, when it replaced the historic and beloved neighborhood restaurant Moran's. With the closing of that Chelsea classic, The Fillmore Room's expansive layout may serve as a metaphor for the rather large shoes the current occupant must fill to stay afloat. Its predecessor's name is still emblazoned on the building's facade, left, perhaps, as a reminder that all that square footage can be an unforgiving burden in New York's expensive real estate market.

In a move no doubt designed to draw coveted covers on a typically quiet industry "off night," The Fillmore Room has booked some top tier talent for a weekly residency every Monday evening. From 6:30-10:00 PM, the Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, a 13 piece swing-era big band, plays to a boisterous audience of smartly dressed diners and dancers in the restaurant's ballroom.

Led by Glenn Crytzer, a ubiquitous presence in the New York "Vintage" Jazz scene and one of the best in the business in authentically recreating the jazz sound of the 20's, 30's and 40's, this large ensemble plays three sets of spectacular swing, showcasing everything from impeccably performed Count Bassie classics to more obscure deep cuts you won't hear anywhere else and original compositions from Crytzer himself.

ESSENTIAL INFO:

-Total Cost: From $20-$65 per person depending upon ticket tier (see below). Tax and tip included.

-There are three ticket types for this event: Standing room only = $10, a seat at a shared table = $15, and a private table for 2 = $40 (for the table, not per person). For table reservations, there is a $30 food/beverage minimum per person. No minimum for standing room tickets, but be sure to at least buy a drink to support the cause.

-If you do sit at a table, put that food/beverage minimum toward drinks, as the food is, unfortunately, underwhelming. On a recent visit, the grilled Spanish octopus was tough and chewy, the veal ricotta meatballs dry and bland. If you do want to snack, the small jars of sharable spreads are pretty decent, particularly the smoked trout rillette.

-Service can be slow, so be patient and be ready with your order when the server does eventually come to your table.

-Glenn Crytzer also plays every Sunday night at Pegu Club with his quartet, The Pegu Club Allstars. Read about it here.

NEARBY: Cookshop, a comfortable neighborhood spot with really solid seasonal American cuisine, is a perfect place for a pre-show dinner. It's one block north.
