Saturday: A Tropical Staycation in New York City - Part 2

Can't swing a sojourn in the Caribbean this year? You can still get tropical without the travel right here in NYC. Find out how with this three-part weekend itinerary. Catch up with Part 1 here.

MISS FAVELA

Day 2 of your tropical staycation has you island hopping across the East River to Brooklyn. The first stop is Miss Favela, a Brazilian bistro named after the impoverished settlements scattered about the outskirts of Brazil's major cities.

In this botequim (traditional Brazilian bar) under the BQE, flip flops can be found nailed to the corrugated tin roof and scuffed up metal tables are adorned with plastic floral covers. Despite its name, Miss Favela's carefully curated thematic motifs, like the deflated soccer balls stuffed on shelves next to vintage Brazilian beer bottles, evoke a vacationer's vision of Rio de Janeiro, rather than a third world watering hole from a suburban shantytown.

Every Saturday afternoon, beginning around 2:00 PM, a live samba band gets the party going, as plates are cleared to make more room for caipirinhas. Lingering diners soon become dancers and the room gets more raucous with every tune.

ESSENTIAL INFO

-Total Cost: About $35 for several drinks from the bar. Tax and tip included.

-Skip the food, as the traditional Brazilian bill of fare features pricey plates of meat that come out overcooked and under seasoned. Stake out a spot at the bar instead.

-The live band usually plays until 6:00 PM. Swing by on the earlier side to avoid a line.

-Cash only.

After samba, saunter up the street to Surf Bar, the platonic ideal of a seaside shack.

The decor, a maritime mess of beach themed bric-a-brac, looks like it just washed up on the walls. Surf boards line the low ceilings and drinkers shuffle along the sand covered floors (be prepared to empty your shoes after your stay).

With an extensive menu of tropical cocktails and frozen drinks, Surf Bar certainly brings out Brooklyn's inner island.

ESSENTIAL INFO:

-Total Cost: $25 for a couple tropical drinks. Tax and tip included.

Finish your evening at Battery Harris, where the bright colors and lanai couches bring to mind a rustic tropical resort. The bar straddles two rooms, with service windows open to both a spacious indoor dining/dancing area and an even more expansive outdoor deck, which is enclosed during the winter months.

On weekends, DJ's spin a mix of old school hip hop and pop music to a packed house of partiers. If the dance floor becomes too congested for comfort, order a drink from the deck and, as you peer through the bar to the party taking place on the other side, imagine that your back is to the beach instead of the BQE (the rhythmic whir of passing cars sort of sounds like crashing surf... sort of).

ESSENTIAL INFO:

-Total Cost: About $25 for a couple cocktails. Tax and tip included.

-DJ sets begin around 11:00 PM and go until closing.
