Friday: A Tropical Staycation in New York City (Part 1)
/Can't swing a sojourn in the Caribbean this year? You can still get tropical without the travel right here in NYC. Find out how with this three-part weekend itinerary:
A more accessible sister spot than its West Village counterpart, Miss Lily's 7A is an excellent place to start your Friday night. If the bright colors, loud music and clashing patterns won't stir your senses after a long day at work, the spicy Jamaican fare certainly will.
Start off with a plate of fantastically crispy cod fish fritters, served with a curry dipping sauce; they won't be left on the table for long. The jerk chicken is also a must order. It's slow cooked, finished on the grill and slathered in some seriously good jerk sauce. It definitely brings the heat, so pair the poultry with some beachy cocktails and you'll be feeling the vacation vibe in no time.
ESSENTIAL INFO:
-Total Cost: About $60 per person for dinner and drinks. Tax and tip included.
-A limited number of reservations are available nightly. Large groups are accommodated.
After dinner, head up the street to Cienfuegos, a second floor cocktail den with Cuban inspired drinks and decor. The dimly lit space is divided into two rooms, where sponge-painted walls in green and pink pastels pop against large, cream-colored and very comfy leather chairs.
Now, you won't actually get a table any time soon after arriving, as there will assuredly be a long wait on a Friday evening. So, put your name on the list and await your "table ready" text at the bar on the corner (see below).
Once you do feel that buzz (the one in your pocket), keep it (the one in your head) going with a well-made rum punch. Punches at Cienfuegos come in several varieties and bowl sizes, making them perfect for a pair and great for a group. For those in the mood for a single-serving beverage, there is a large selection of individual rum cocktails. Food is also available and quite good, particularly the beef empanadas.
ESSENTIAL INFO:
-Total Cost: About $25 per person for a shared rum punch. Tax and tip included.
-Reservations are only accepted for dinner.
Mother of Pearl, brought to you by the same owner as Cienfuegos and located just next door, is where you'll want to wait until your table upstairs is ready. Opening in the former Gin Palace space last summer, Mother of Pearl received the tiki bar treatment, featuring totem pole bar stools and banquettes upholstered in a print reminiscent of your great aunt's patio furniture from her screened-in porch in south Florida.
Cocktails are expertly-concocted, one of which is served in a kitschy but cool shark-shaped glass.
ESSENTIAL INFO:
-Total Cost: Less than $40 for a couple cocktails. Tax and tip included.
-Reservations are accepted for drinks and dinner.
