Want to treat yourself on a Tuesday evening?

Look no further than Willow, a diminutive dining room with high ceilings and odd angles, brought to you by the chef and proprietor of The Pines in Gowanus. The compact kitchen serves seasonal cuisine paired with natural wine, a short list of cocktails and a nice selection of beer on tap.

On Tuesday evenings, Willow features "The Fixe," a 7 course spread of shared plates for only $45. The "chef's choice" approach to the night's menu means you won't know just what you're getting when you order, but the staff will make note of any allergies or aversions, as the chef is happy to accommodate most proclivities of the palate.

On a recent visit, which happened to be the first night that the tasting was available, dinner began with a series of small offerings served in rapid succession: a somewhat perfunctory plate of pickled vegetables, satisfactory fried potatoes with bonito mayo, a bowl of boss brussel sprouts and apple butter, and a thick slice of terrific warm pumpkin bread with cultured butter.

The subsequent courses were either lifted right from the regular à la carte menu or bespoke riffs on those dishes, including a very good mackerel tartare, served with crunchy puffed rice, a carrot soup prepared with yogurt, brown butter and a rye-coriander crumble, and a delicious warm radicchio salad with some sweet, honeynut squash.

The meal ended with short rib served on a bed of kimchi, a nice combination when eaten together, and a pierogi filled with sweet potato and miso.

There was no dessert course, which would have been welcome, even if it were just a small bite of something sweet to put a cap on the meal.

Despite the absence of a dessert, the entire tasting is a tremendous value and will take you about 90 minutes to two hours to finish: A strong buy.
