Tuesday: Burlesque in a Bathtub

The bouncer standing outside Stone Street Coffee on 9th Avenue in Chelsea isn't carding people for their cappuccinos. When the espresso machine gets turned off for the evening, a red light above a discreet door inside the store gets flipped on, indicating that the "secret" bar behind the wall is open for business.

While its name evokes the low-quality alcohol produced in response to the 18th Amendment, you won't find any moonshine here. Bathtub Gin is a speakeasy-style cocktail lounge located within Stone Street Coffee, its centerpiece a copper clawfoot tub, around which crowds and couples consume superb drinks served by well-endowed women in cleavage-complimenting flapper outfits. The drinks are $15, and while that is on the slightly higher end of the scale for what you will spend on a good cocktail these days, your drink does come with some complimentary entertainment.

Every Sunday and Tuesday evening, Bathtub Gin hosts a free burlesque show brought to you by the women of Wasabassco, the entertainment outfit putting on the most licentious live shows in the city. The intimate floor production features several acts occurring just inches from your seat, as the performers strip, shake and strut around the room, weaving between tables and engaging with the audience. Before the night is over, one of the ladies will take her act to the tub.

Admission to many of Wasabassco's other New York residencies will run you $20 and up, so an evening at Bathtub Gin is a fantastic way to save some money on a striptease.

ESSENTIAL INFO

-Total Cost: Less than $40 per person for two drinks and a free show. Tax and tip included.

-The performance begins at 10:00 PM (9:30 PM on Sundays). There is also a Sunday afternoon show at 2:30 PM, in case you like your brunch with a side of boob.

-Bathtub Gin accepts reservations for tables, so unless you want to be cordoned off in the busy bar area, reserve your seat two weeks in advance.

-The food is so-so at Bathtub Gin, but considering the evening starts pretty late on a weekday, you're probably not sitting down to dinner here. Stick with the drinks and if you're peckish, you can toast your own s'mores right at the table for $5 a person.

NEARBY: Get dinner just up 9th Avenue at El Quinto Pino, an excellent Spanish tapas and wine bar.
