Tuesday: Cafe Luluc

mussels mariniere

Cafe Luluc is a small French restaurant with all the familiar (clichéd?) embellishments of a typical Parisian bistro: large mirrors, two-tone rattan chairs up front, Pernod Ricard decals and red banquettes. The somewhat hackneyed, yet still alluring decorations aside, Cafe Luluc offers solid provisions at very reasonable prices.

On Tuesday evenings, Cafe Luluc serves a moules frites for only $9.95. The mussels come in a variety of preparations, including mariniere, poulette, curry and even Negra Modelo. Pair the bivalves with a mojito, a Stella Artois, or a serviceable and generously poured chardonnay, each just $5. There's even a complimentary bread basket to begin.

The mussels themselves are plump and tasty. The broth could use just a touch more seasoning and the toasted slices of bread resting on top are more like croutons. Nevertheless, it is a fully satiating dish and the fries are damn good.
