A picnic in a sculpture park, pints in a public house, pizza on a roof deck, and partying at two neighborhood bars: Your Saturday in Clinton Hill.

STOP 1: BROOKLYN KOLACHE CO. (2:00PM)

Sweet kolaches from brooklyn kolache co.

Sweet kolaches from brooklyn kolache co.

The picnic preparations begin with a kolache, a pastry from Central Europe that goes back hundreds of years. Since the mid-nineteenth century, when large numbers of Czech immigrants began to settle in central Texas, kolaches have also become a time-honored Texan treat.

Thanks to an Austin ex-pat, who in 2012 opened Brooklyn Kolache Co., New Yorkers can sample the sweet and savory staples of the Texan diet. Here, the sweet kolaches are filled with traditional ingredients, such as berries, sweet cheese, and poppy seed, as well as specialty fillings like PB & J. The savory options resemble large empanadas, with fillings like kielbasa, chorizo, egg and cheese, stuffed inside pockets of semi-sweet dough.

Get some of both and head to your next stop.

STOP 2: CLINTON HILL PICKLES

Four walls and a room full of pickles. Damn good pickles.

That's pretty much all you get at Clinton Hill Pickles, as it seems the entire decorating budget was exhausted on a giant (awesome) moustached cuke sporting a cowboy hat. The otherwise spartan space is lined with huge red barrels of salt brine from which sweet, sour and outstanding spicy cucumbers are plucked and placed in plastic containers.

Can't decide what kind to get? Samples are graciously provided. There's also kimchi and a variety of other mixed vegetables available for purchase. If you're into pickles, this place has some of the best. Get a quart or two and proceed to your picnic location.

STOP 3: PRATT INSTITUTE SCULPTURE PARK (2:30PM)

A college and university best known for its programs in the fine arts, the Pratt Institute is home to the largest sculpture park in New York City. Featuring the works of college faculty, students, world renowned sculptors and up and coming artists, the Pratt campus is a compelling place to spend an afternoon any time of year.

After touring the grounds and taking in some culture, sit on the quad and people watch or find a corner to lay out in for a couple of hours.

STOP 4: BROOKLYN PUBLIC HOUSE (5:00PM)

After the park, head over to Brooklyn Public House, a great Irish pub and a neighborhood favorite among locals. With sidewalk seating and an extensive draft list, Brooklyn Public House is a perfect stop for a some pre-dinner pints.

STOP 5: GRAZIELLA'S (7:00PM)

The ground floor of Graziella's is a little slice of suburbia, a nondescript space with a small bar and a dining room where families can catch an early pizza dinner. But upstairs lies a a surprisingly underappreciated roof deck, spanning almost the entire footprint of the building. Because Graziella's accepts reservations for both the downstairs dining room and the tables on the roof, you can have a stress free supper in an outdoor setting. Share a wood fired pizza with a pal or partner and order a bottle of Italian vino from an affordable, but very serviceable, wine list.

STOP 6: THE GREAT GEORGIANA OR HOT BIRD

Here you have a choice. You could walk a few blocks and hit Hot Bird, a laid back bar with a patio, picnic tables and a fire pit. Or, you could head 500 feet up the street to The Great Georgiana for some more sidewalk seating, cocktails and record spinning DJ's usually playing old funk and soul music. Or do both.
