7 Nights of Holiday Lights - Part 6
/Want to check out some fantastic New York City light displays without the holiday hordes? Follow this 7 part series of seasonal itineraries for outstanding alternatives to Rockefeller Center.
Established in 1864, Pete's Tavern insists that it is "the oldest continuously operated bar & restaurant in New York City," an oft disputed declaration by several other establishments with equally ambiguous origins.
Regardless of its historical pedigree, Pete's maintains a wonderful "old New York" atmosphere with a beautiful rosewood bar, pressed tin ceilings and high back booths. During the holiday season, the ceiling glows bright red with one of the better restaurant light displays in the city.
The place is often packed, especially on the weekends, but Pete's does accept reservations for those looking to eat. Call ahead and be sure to request a table in the bar room (the best seat in the house is the round banquet in the front corner window opposite the bar). The food is fine, your standard pub fare, but the spirit couldn't be more festive.
Total Cost: About $40 per person for dinner and drinks. Tax and tip per person.
Best Nights to Go: As mentioned above, weekends draw large crowds of revelers, but the reservation policy helps. Weeknights early in the week are quieter.
Nearby: The Stand - A fantastic comedy club with no drink minimum and above average cocktails.
