7 Nights of Holiday Lights - Part 2
/Want to check out some fantastic New York City light displays without the holiday hordes? Follow this 7 part series of seasonal itineraries for outstanding alternatives to Rockefeller Center.
While the uninitiated are cuing up for Rolf's, the German restaurant and holiday institution packed so tightly with tchotchkes and tourists that it's about as comfortable as being caught between Santa's belly and belt buckle, those who want a less snug celebratory experience should head across the street to Molly's Shebeen.
Around since 1960, Molly's is as traditional as it gets when it comes to Irish Bars in Manhattan. With its low ceilings, dark brick walls, sawdusted floors and a roaring log-burning fireplace, there's no better bar for a cold winter's day or night, particularly during the holidays, when a serious amount of string lights snake throughout the space.
Minutes easily become hours at Molly's, as the friendly staff is quick to refill pints and replenish plates of rib-sticking Irish classics. Guinness begins to go down like water, aided by session sustaining shepherd's pie and Irish lamb stew. If you have plans after your visit, you should probably cancel them before walking through the door, because once inside, you're not likely to move on from Molly's any time soon.
Total Cost: About $50 per person for dinner and drinks. Tax and tip included.
Best Nights to Go: Go early in the week for a table without a wait. Molly's is also a great place to post up for a weekend afternoon.
Nearby: The PIT - A comedy school and theater featuring free improv shows on Wednesday evenings.
